What is the difference between a course and a workshop? You attend a course regularly, maybe once or twice a week. The lessons are in chronological order. The workshop takes place in one period of time; in my case it’s a two-day workshop, where I try to say and show everything I know and can do in two days. I held my first workshop seven years ago and since then more than 700 people have attended them, with many coming back again, which makes me very happy and is also great satisfaction for me.

I’m not a theoretician but a practitioner first and foremost, so I think about what I would like to get out of a workshop I attend. It’s knowledge, seeing how the image is created from the first line, what to look out for, what to pay attention to, how to mix colours, why to use this and that, and that I take home a painting is just a bonus. But above all, I have acquired new skills; I know it’s possible and that it’s necessary to paint. Workshops are designed for both beginners and advanced students. They can be challenging for some people, but they are also challenging for me, because I always try to pay attention to everyone individually and try to pass on everything that is in me.

I used to travel all over the country with workshops, holding 25–30 a year. I can’t devote as much time to them at the moment, but I will always offer a few dates. I am delighted by the interest; people’s satisfaction is my reward and the fact that the interest is still growing after seven years is the best reward. I will always post new workshop dates in advance.

“I’ve been to Michal’s workshops four times and each time the course has brought me something different, either a shift in technical skills or just a nice relaxing weekend. I prepared myself mentally for the first course and reassured myself that I would be able to do it. After seeing the subject, only one thing came to mind: “I’ll never paint this; he must be crazy”. Over the weekend Michal taught me how to look at the subject, how to work properly with pastels, how to create volume through light and shadow… and how to open a bottle of wine with a wooden spoon.
